Yasse TABUCHI Japanese, b. 1921

Yasse Tabuchi was born in 1921 in Kitakyûshû, a town in southern Japan. Between 1945 and 1951, he studied Art History at Tokyo Imperial University.

In 1951, he arrived in France and settled in Paris.

He encountered Celtic art, then travelled to Italy, where he discovered Byzantine and medieval art.

In 1959, he moved to the Essonne village of Vauhallan, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He also opened another studio in Le Croisic, Brittany, in 1987.

In 1964, he signed a contract with Jean Pollak, director of the prestigious Galerie Ariel in Paris.

In 1976, he published his first book, “Seiôjin-no-genzô”, and went on to publish seven books in his native language on comparative Eastern and Western sensibilities and thought.

A keen traveller, Yasse Tabuchi has visited many countries, including the Nordic countries, Italy, the Balkan countries, the island of Ibiza, India, South-East Asia, China, Turkey, Syria and Jordan.

In 1985, he was awarded the medal of Officier des Arts et des Lettres.

He died in 2009 in Vauhallan.
