A contemporary art phenomenon, Soly Cissé has emerged in recent years as one of the rising stars of his generation. He lives and works in Dakar, Senegal, where he was born in 1969.
A multi-media creator, his paintings, populated by strange and disquieting creatures somewhere between the human and animal genres, reflect a tormented subconscious.
“There's a blatant desire to provoke disharmony and hurtful tension - his paintings are no picnic. Balance is only achieved in a paradoxical situation: the more you enter his monster-populated microcosm, the more you become aware of the need for these great confrontations between intense blues and strident, bitter yellows. It's only in the slow, patient apprenticeship of the codes and modes of his plastic language that harmony is gradually re-established, adjusting its fragile equilibrium, yet never erasing the virulent, warlike nature of his gesture and thought.”
