A contemporary art phenomenon, Soly Cissé has emerged in recent years as one of the rising stars of his generation. He lives and works in Dakar, Senegal, where he was born in 1969. He has been selected to represent Senegal at the “Lumières d'Afrique” exhibition organized by the African Artists for Development endowment fund, to be held in November 2015 at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, in conjunction with the 21st Climate Change Convention.
A multi-media creator, his paintings, populated by strange and disquieting creatures between human and animal genres, reflect a tormented unconscious.
“There's a blatant desire to provoke disharmony and hurtful tension in the painter's work. Balance is only achieved in a paradoxical situation: the more you enter his monster-populated microcosm, the more you become aware of the need for these grand confrontations between intense blues and strident, bitter yellows. It is only in the slow, patient apprenticeship of the codes and modes of his plastic language that harmony is gradually re-established, adjusting its fragile equilibrium, yet never erasing the virulent, warlike nature of his gesture and thought.”
