The artist, who died in 2009 at the age of 88, arrived in Paris in 1951, where he met Alechinski, Jorn and the painters of the CoBrA group, as well as Foujita, with whom he became close friends. Although rooted in European painting, his style reflects an original universe at the crossroads of Eastern and Western traditions. He left a body of work of flamboyant color, through which he never ceased to evoke nature: trees, rocks, gardens in bloom, volcanoes and rainbows compose a language vibrant with joy and vital energy.
“Colors stimulate each other, they possess brilliance without killing their neighbors. In this tension, harmony is not lost.”
Toshio Yamanashi, Director, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Osaka
