Alain Kleinmann began painting at the age of 7. His first solo exhibition took place at the age of 18. Memory, writing, traces, materials, old photos, books... form the framework of his painting.
He has had over a hundred solo exhibitions in galleries, museums and contemporary art centers worldwide: Paris, London, Stockholm, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Havana, Abidjan, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, Beijing...
His works have appeared at the most prestigious international art fairs, including FIAC, Art Paris, New York Art Fair, Art Miami, Istanbul Art Fair...
A dozen monographs on his work have been published, including texts by Aragon, Marcel Marceau, André Glucksmann, Elie Wiesel, Vladimir Yankelevitch, Ivry Gitlis, Georges Moustaki, Hastaire, Martin Gray, Richard Dembo, Pierre Restany...
He has designed sets for the theater (Théâtre la Bruyère, Maison des Arts de Créteil) and numerous book covers. Several films and university theses have been devoted to his work.
In 1999, he co-founded the Mémoire group (AlainKleinmann, Hastaire, Yuri Kuper, Boris Zaborov, Martin Vaughn-James, Wang Yan Cheng...).
In 2012, a play was staged in Cuba, “La peinture et autres lieux”, inspired by the visual and literary work of Alain Kleinmann. It was presented by the Aldaba company for the first time at the Bertold Brecht Theater on the occasion of the XI Havana International Art Biennial.
In 2014, a 584-page catalog raisonné on the artist was published by Editions d'Art Somogy.
There are plans to create an Alain Kleinmann museum in Haifa, Israel.
